Mossy Cave Mini-Waterfall

On the Mossy Cave trail, (near Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah) there are several waterfalls, Although near the main trail, this mini-waterfall did not attract much attention. That's why I was there. I enjoyed this one. It is about 2 feet high. Taken with a Canon 550D, Tamron 18-270 lens set @75mm, 1/15 sec, f32, ISO 100.

Red Canyon Light Art

This was a fun time with my wife, Jena; son-in-law, Chris; and grandaughter Melia, who painted this red rock with light as we exposed for 15 seconds. That bright object is Venus, and the grouping of stars above Venus is Pleiades (aka Seven Sisters). We went through several trial-and-error attempts before this shot. Taken with a Canon 550D, 15 sec exposure, ISO 200, f3.5 at 18mm. Taken at the Red Canyon area just west of Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah.

Reflections on a Night Stand

I woke at 2 AM, and looked at the hotel nightstand for the alarm clock, and saw this. The yellow alarm clock face reflected through a bottle of water. Taken with a Lumix, 15 sec exposure. Good night!

M42 in Orion - From the front yard

The neighbors thought I was crazy. But, not bad for almost a full moon lighting the sky. Taken with a Canon 550D, Tamron 200mm lens, 2 secs per image, ISO 3200, f5.6. 100 images stacked in DeepSkyStacker.  The picture below is the same as the one above, except the neighboring stars and other space "objects" are also identified. Creeepy!

Lifeless tree reflections near Utah Lake, taken at sundown, which gave the picture the bluish-gray cast. Imaged with a Canon 550D, Tamron Lens, 1/15 second exposure, ISO 100, f5.0.

Nest of Baby Rabbits

Taken with a Sony a500, 1/250 second exposure, f4.5, with ISO 250.  The mother rabbit was watching me the whole time I was taking this picture.

Which way is up?

Reflections can cause interesting perceptions of what's real. Here is a picture of one of the cliffs at the Pinnacles reflected in a calm pool of water.

Now the picture is rotated 180 degrees and flipped horizontally. The straw is a giveaway that the water pool is not really sky. But, I like it better, upside down.  Taken with a Sony a500, Sigma Wide Angle lens, 1/80 sec exposure, f11, ISO 200.

Simple and Free

I looked closer and saw this after my morning coffee. Taken with a Canon 550D, Tamron 18-270 lens, ISO 400, f6.3, 1/60 second exposure. (It is the oil and water on top of the brewed, crushed coffee beans. The swirls were changing shape and color right before my eyes)

Steam Bubbles

Well, I've gone over the edge now, but what is a guy to do for pictures with cloudy winter skys? This is a picture of inside the top of my coffee pot reservoir, steam bubbles... taken with a Canon T2i, 1/60 sec., ISO 400, f6.3.

Itsy Bitsy Spider Web

Sirius Color and Mars, Too

The star Sirius is the brightest star in the winter night sky, and is very easy to spot. It is down and to the east of Orion's belt. It "twinkles" and changes colors even to the naked eye. Here are a couple of pictures taken with about a 4 second exposure, and also moving the camera a bit to get some star trail. Since it does change color as it "twinkles" you can see the blues, yellows, and reds in the trail itself.  Contrast this to Mars, the last image in this post, which is definitely orangish...

Sirius is in the constellation Canis Major (The Greater Dog). The star trail below is fitting, I believe.

Desert Dessert

This is a blend of two pictures. A sunset blended with the sandy desert hills east of Green River, Utah. Taken with a Sony Cybershot camera, 1/358 sec, f5.6, ISO 100, at 24mm. Blended with Photoshop Elements 7.

Love Doves

Two doves mated and built a nest in our backyard. The male was very protective, as I just went out for a closer look. Taken with a Sony a500 DSLR, 1/320 of a second, f5.6, ISO 1000.
